speedo unit
hullo there,
after tooing and frowing found out that my speedo cable is fine on my bike and its the speedo head on the clocks that is knackered which isnt what I wanted to hear from the garage.
So I now need a new speedo unit, and wondered if anyone had a mph unit going on here, fleebay has a number of them and now just waiting for one with a similar sort of mileage on it to come up....

cheers ross, found a few at fair prices on ebay, but trying to work out if having one with slightly less or slightly more mileage on it is better...

Re: speedo unit
Unusual for the clock end to go, I've gone through a few pick-ups on the wheel.
I've got a set of clocks, but no use as it's in km/h.
Less might be OK as long as you can do the mileage to get it over your current reading before the next MOT.

Re: speedo unit
Ah didn't think of that...
Thought the place I will get it changed also does my mots so might be ok as the lower closest clocks I found were a good 6,000 miles out!
I am on 38,0000 and something and I saw some with 41,000 miles they might be better as its closer?

Get the lower one and sit there with the Black & Decker if you really worried Dave.
U sure it's not the pickup on the wheel, the original has a plastic worm drive and is prone to failure where as the official replacement has a metal wormdrive.

Re: speedo unit
Hmmm might be worth having a look at it again then, though don't really want to keep paying out an hr labour here or there, tough one really.
As you both say nick and John it could be a delayed response to me slight tap with that m class last year......

Re: speedo unit
ok got the bike back today and the spanner man has said that the speedo head at the clocks is worn out, the fettlted it and there is a spring that connects the cable in thats loose and just spins round...
anyways found a few closeish milage units on ebay, i am on 38,000 these are high 32,000 and high 33,000 units, now am i right in believing that if i took a cordless drill to a cable with the new(old) units to wind the mileage up that this is highly illegal?

Re: speedo unit
If your adding mileage to the Speedo how can that be illegal? If you were taking mileage off, then........
At the end of the day you are just making it the same as your original. Like I think it was Nick said, keep all paperwork for if or when you sell it on.

Re: speedo unit
tbh it doesnt bother me, I just want it close so in know what mileage i am doing, though tbh just having a working and speedo would be nice!
I'll keep the original speedo anyway and if i fettle the new unit before its fitted then that way if the record the mileage down then that should be ok,
might change the lights in the speedo unit (new old one) that is to these led's I have seen people have on here

It'll take some time to get the mileage up. I'd just do a lot of riding, just seems way more fun
I've found the speedo to over read by about 10%, so that's 3 800 more miles shown on the clock than has actually been done anyway.

Re: speedo unit
ah ok, well if thats the case I shall just get one that is close enough to what I have try to get it then get it fitted, only so many time I can ride past a speed camera at a complete snails pace as I am unsure of what speed I am doing!

Re: speedo unit
This reminds me of my first car. A mk3 Cortina. I was going to sell it and a mate said as it was high milage he had another mate who could 'help' me out with that.. So took it to him to get clocked for a tenner and when he got the dashboard off and the clocks out there was a tie wrap behind and a note that said 'OH NO!! NOT AGAIN'!!!!!

That's Brilliant.
Bit like the disgruntled Ford employee year ago that put a marble in the door of random Mondeo's coming of the production line with a note 'I bet that pissed u off!'

Re: speedo unit
Just to note that changing the mileage on a speedo is not illegal. Nor is having a speedo with a mileage less than the vehicle's mileage. What IS illegal is claiming that the false mileage is true. So, whatever you do just keep notes, paperwork and take photos and be up-front about the true mileage and the reasons for changing it.
