The Eifel - Test the water 2 Empty The Eifel - Test the water 2

Post  0ldcat Tue Sep 29 2009, 11:11

The Eifel is a beautiful semi mountainous region of Germany close to the Mosel and also has the Nürburgring in there. It's a national park much akin to Snowdonia or the Cairngorms. (please have a look at the link).
It's about a 3 or 4 hour journey from Calais to get to.

So here's the water tester !

The German thundercat Site is holding their yearly meeting (much like our "Something for the Weekend" meets), there next year (2010) from May 13th to 16th (thurs through Sun).

Sadly it is the weekend before our BCII so there's a slight clash . . . . sorry to ask for the choose, perhaps you could do both Very Happy

Question ?
Who - How many (if anyone) would be interested in making the trip to The Eifel and seeing what the other side has to offer ?

Remember we had 10 of the Dutch thundercat riders come over to one of our Welshpool meets and what an international flavour that gave the whole weekend too.
Is it time for us to spread our wings as a group and return the trip ? . . . . albeit to Germany and not Holland . Clap

Any possible maybe's ????

Really, really, REALLY like the idea of this but it's just too early to commit right now. If it stays a possibility I'll check back when I am more aware of my/our plans.

Having been to the Eifel region before I can vouch for how nice the area is (notwithstanding the superb Nurburgring).

However, it's a little too early for me to say yay or nay. Plus the Euro/£ isn't to inviting at the moment. Makes Europe rather expensive.

Keep the thread going though, you never know what might happen.

Hi Tel,

Let me know if this one's gonna happen!

Count me in as a definite maybe.

As long as I can get something else moved in May and keep the use of my holidays down to a minimum then i'm in.

Wouldn't get away with Bishops Castle on the way back too though. Out of interest....How do the Germans get to Scotland on their bikes? Chunnel, or Ferry and what are the ferry options?

Ross,

1. If the Germans go to Scotland I should think they'd ride their bikes like the rest of us Very Happy . By what means or route they'd travel would depend on where they start from.

2. If you refer to our chunnel/ferry options getting to the Eifel , a cursorary search showed the chunnel to be the cheaper option of crossing the water @ approx £47 return. That however is dependant on time of day you cross. I chose as a test 7am out on the 13th and 7pm back on the 16th. Those times may not suit all wishing to do this.

Thomas,

This is the Germans one time annual thundercat meeting like our Welshpool used to be so they have set the dates and it will as far as I'm aware go ahead. With or without us
This thread is just a toe in the water to see if UK thundercat ers would be interested in attending.

Keep the comments coming in folks . . . . . . I know and appreciate it is way early to commit (for me too). All I'm interested in is a show of hands so to speak as to whether you'd be at all enthused to make a long weekend trip to this meeting on mainland Europe. . . . . Make a change eh? and as Toni said

I've got a Rosyth <-> Zeebrugge Ferry option as well which might be an option.....saves a lot of motorway miles/fuel.

Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday departure from Rosyth at 5pm
Monday, Wed & Friday return from Zee to Rosyth at 6pm

20hr crossing

Might be a better option for those way oop North.

TEL - Can you confirm the days of the ride-outs. Can I assume it is a ride-out on the Friday and Saturday?????? If so I could come over on Tuesday>Wednesday Ferry (or possibly ride down for a CHANNEL chunnel or ferry with others) and back on the Monday>Tuesday Ferry

Cheers

May i answer? Yes! We have ride-outs on Friday and Saturday Wink

On Thursday is the arrival over the day and on Sunday the departure after the breakfast.

And by the way:
I take my hat off for everyone who is willing to do that trip to our meeting in spite of the free time and the budget that is needed Exclamation great clink

Thank you Toni ....

There you have it ... travel over on Thursday and back on the Sunday. Two good days in the Eifel, and the odd bratwurst and a bier in the evenings.

I did hear tell from one of the organisers (while chatting in their chatroom) that they might try fitting in a lap or three of the Nürburgring.
Like our next years events though nothing is properly planned yet or set in stone apart from the dates and a general format.

cheers

Bu**er. It's that Nurburgring tempter thing again.

Done it once, on the Cat, and now desperately want to do it on the Blade.

Got to work out a way of being able to afford BC, Germany and doing a trip to Tuscany now. Hmm, can I sell my body and make a bit of money? I wonder...............................

Yep......it is a bit of a sweetener isn't it. Even if there isn't a organised visit to the ring as part of the rideout I'm sure those who are interested could visit there on the Sunday (you'd think it might be busy then though Mad )
