Wondered if could pick the brains of those wot know!!

I 'topped up' my oil level yesterday & what with the shite viewing glass found it hard to know how much.

However, this morning on way to work 5 minutes into journey opening up throttle on big roundabout i left behind an absolute shitcloud of smoke, honestly not seen so much smoke in my life, then every time i opened throttle smoke spat out exhaust. I pulled into lay by, and in nuetral tweaking throttle smoke was still coming from exhaust and there was a big puddle of oil from breather hose on side, left it few minutes then set of to nurse it the remaining mile and half to work, and altho wasnt giving any real beans the smoke wasnt coming out, i have now pulled up outside work, again tweaking throttle there is no smoke again and there is still oil coming from breather hose, not as much but still dripping!!

Is it best case scenario & likely i overfilled oil or is it possibly something far more sinister?????

Defo check the level, if its overfilled crankcase pressure can rise & even blow a seal.

As Robert says may have over filled. I did it on a car once over filled it a little and smoked exactly the same. But caused more problems when it wouldn't start then ran for a few miles then would stop all because over filled it. Could be piston rings :S but doubt it you would know if it was.lol

That sounds like its got way too much in it mate, I wouldn't start her up till you have managed to drain it. Is there a reason why you can't see through the sight glass?

If you unscrew the drain plug but not take it out should trickle out through the threads, easiest way. short of tipping the bike up side down.lol might have to do it trial and error syphen it out n check it. Or put it into a clean container and empty out a load and pour back what ya need.my sight glass is weird has tear drop shape does make it hard to see

Well after you guys advising, now changed plans slightly, leaving bike at work til monday when can bring paddock stand over and drain whole lot, then as say fill up with required amount, dont fancy starting her up now :( Shocked :(

Sight glass has always been crap to see and just looks dirty inside & after mech. told me at service oil light doesnt work ive always been paranoid of running low! Sods law its the opposite now causing problems!

But will get to eyeball viewing glass once empty see how it looks & try comparing when re-fill.

Appreciate all the help, great

You won't be able to read it if its above the glass, it will just look dark.

Thats the problem, it looks that dirty its hard to tell is it that colour because oil level is above or is oil level below window & window is just dirty!

Thats why try to use self made dipstick when possible but seems to have not worked to plan this time!!!! Rolling Eyes

The sight glass does have the left, right and bottom
blackened into a U shape.

When the bike is on it's side stand you should be able to see this and when it is upright some oil in this U shape above the bottom but below the top. A torch does help.

Mine seems to have a slow leak so I've been checking it more often recently.

Cheers

Well first time ever done anything mechanical or spanner'ish in life today!!!

Decided to take fairings off both sides today as left was coming off anyway, most screws and bolts in right state (probably replace over winter) gave bit of spring clean then onto oil problem

Don't know how as I topped up with 1ltr Friday but today emptied - get this - Embarassed - 5ltr of the stuff - what an arse!! Anyhow 2.6 back in, clean, fairings all back on, out for blast getting speed & revs up a bit and all 'fortunately' seems to be fine, no smoke, nice & smooth, so hoping can relax & enjoy what riding comes way with cold winter on way!!!

Cheers all for advice, greatly appreciated Smile
