What the hell is that thing? ...I think a spanner or wrench should do it Tom. Check out the Haynes Manual first in case there any precautions though.

That won't work. That device needs to have a hollow "yoke top nut", but the Thundercat has a domed one, as you can see. The domed part on the top is part of the nut, so can't be removed (without some drilling or cutting).

Save yourself the bother and get a Telferizer (www.telferizer.com). This is a guy who takes top nuts and modifies them to put a threaded sleeve in them, to which you can than add a RAM ball mount. You pay him some money and send him your old nut, which he exchanges for a modified one. I got mine in around 2 days.

Sounds good Paul.
Might invest in one.
Mine is mounted using the bolts at the top of the fork 'clamps'
This would be a better/safer option..

So long as you have something big enough to undo that top nut, it takes 30 seconds. Undo the nut, put the replacement on, tighten, done. The supplied Ram ball mount then screws into your new nut and will take any 1" ball-and-socket type of mount. My TomTom rider mount slots right on.

I got it with the Garmin Zumo sat nav Tom. You can buy the parts from RAM, they are not cheap but are good quality.

The part which is bolted to the yoke in my picture. It should be bolted where the two silver bolts are to the left of the mount bracket, but I wanted the sat nav to be as low as possible. Here is a link to the part, costs £15.26 click me

What's that thing with the red handle?

Is that what Yodel use to make their deliveries? A hand trolley with a sat-nav on it?
(No wonder they're shite Very Happy)

The Telferizer is awesome, I put off buying one due to being a tight wad, but when I finally caved I wished I had bought it sooner, great bit of kit, but on the BlackBird I just drilled a hole in the top yoke and fastened it with two bolts and thread lock from behind.
