Giving bikes a rest for the foreseeable future

Slipped my disc again over the weekend, decided that commuting 140 miles a day on a bike probably isn't helping, among other things. So it's time lay it down for a while, at least a couple of years most likely.

I will try and keep in touch on here, some of you I have on my FB. I'm sure I'll be back so I won't give the "I'll miss you" and "Thanks" speech.

Hi Paul,

Sorry to hear you're hanging up your bike kit for some time to come.

You know your body best, but as you'll know I suffer a similar back problem. I'm sure I say nothing you haven't heard already, but seating posture and lumbar support are the key things "if" you continue to ride.

But rest up and heal well buddy. Please do not become a stranger here and do keep in touch. I think I have you on facetube too, not that I use that medium very often

Seriously though, you're an inspiration in that you keep on going, which gives me hope that I'll still be riding in the future. A bit of rest will do me some good for now though.

Great shame Paul, I have slipped discs and had bac problems similar to you though admitidly I don't do a 140 mile round trip on a bike 5 days a week.

I am sure you will be back on two wheels again soon!

I ride with a heat pad on my back as I too have a knackered disc.

I find the car not much better tho - it's sitting in one position for a length of time that does it.

Yeah it's a lose lose situation Ellis. I find it difficult in a car too, but I just can't find the right bike at the moment and it's all the pulling/pushing it about and maintenance work that really does it. Working from home 2 days a week now which is great so shouldn't take too long to recover.

A mate of mine was a bike instructor and had to jack it in because of his back.
Weirdly he took up mountain biking a year or two later and hasn't had any problems (that weren't as a result of him falling off it) with his back since.


Hey, maybe you should buy one of those wee step-throughs with the bike pedals.

I will certainly be using my mountain bike when I'm able to. I think I'll use the opportunity to take up new hobbies/challenges. It will give me an opportunity to save up and buy a bike I really want at least.
