O-rings are the original form of the 'newer' types of chain, they are OK for smaller bikes. You are right in looking at X-ring.

I suspected it would be bad.. Laughing

Beyond that I can't advise mate, I always let the garage choose the chain and sprockets.

I'm sorry I confused you, o-ring chains have been around for 25+ years so it isn't new, x-ring chains are newer. Not to confuse you anymore only look for x-ring, you don't need a gold one, it's only painted anyway and doesn't mean it is better - unless you keep cleaning it, it will be black soon enough.

I used to buy from M&P, here is the cheapest chain kit they have, there are more expensive kits - what that means is they put in a better quality chain and sometimes better sprockets. This is the one I used to buy.

Hi tom my first chain that came with the cat lasted me 24000 miles before it was stretching badly. I replaced it 2 years ago with the original fitment did chain & sunstar sprockets. If the replacements last the same then all well & good. I don't ride in the rain unless I'm caught out in it & do clean & lubricate the chain regularly so that helps maximise life.

That will be fine Tom, fairly good price too I believe. Are you getting someone to fit it or you having a go yourself? You will need a chain riveting tool if you are changing it!

It is quite do-able just take your time, watch some videos and understand what you are doing before you dive in.
I would suggest using an angle grinder to grind down the pin head to make it easy to push out when removing the old chain as if you don't it is easy to break the push out pin on the chain tool.

From memory 430 chains are the heavy duty ones, 420 are "racing" ones because they are lighter (but don't last as long) and 425 are in the middle.

The sprockets and chain must match and if you are not sure but a "set" of chain and sprockets together.

If you can ride to me I'll help you do it.

Cheers
Rosco

There does appear to be queue forming though.

Good luck Tom.

Arguably Ross has contributed, more than any other member of this forum, to our understanding of the paramount necessity of maintaining the highest standards and carefully checking one's work when working on one's bike.

Or as an Irish mate of mine said, when asked why he did something twice, it's "To be sure, to be sure." Actually he's an aircraft maintenance specialist, so he was only half joking.
