fuel consumption Empty fuel consumption

Post  Nightwatchman Thu Mar 27 2014, 16:38

I'm obsessed with using the fuelly app with my bikes, and constantly monitor the fuel figures due to the mileage I do.
I just did a really geeky couple of days trying to get the absolute best fuel mileage out of the cat by keeping the speed below 60, feathering the throttle, and block changing up the box so not to rev above 4k.
After 76 incredibly boring miles, I used 4.61 litres of fuel. According to fuelly, that's 75mpg!!!!
My fazer 600 only managed 73,
My fz1 has done 48 best,
My TDM did 47 whether I thrashed it or cruised :-/
My bandit 600 was just rubbish at 45 best !!!!

What's the best you guys have got out of your cat?

That's excellent. Cool
It works out at 60.5ml per mile

I never really pay attention, but fuel 'light' to 'light is around the 200 miles mark.
If we assume that the light come on when there's a litre left (19-1=18 litres), then it works out at 90ml per mile...so you've saved a third over average driving style.

Worst I got was about 140 miles from light to light, which works out at 128.5ml per mile, more than double your best.  Shocked

(my rev counter worked back then and I recall there was a lot of bouncing off the redline)

There's 4 litres left in the tank when the light comes on. Well my two Cats did.  don\'t know

19 - 4 = 15ltrs used from light (fill up) to light . . . re-calculate  stars

I use the same system!

However I am very proud that on one crazy ride on my RD350LC YPVS back in day I dragged it down to less than 20 mpg!

I was going on what I could see looking into the tank.
Looking at the handbook it says that the light should cone on when there's 3.1 litres left 'approximately'. (Approximately? Why not just 3 then?)

Looking in the tank I didn't think there was anything near that left...and then I noticed this:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

My rev counter (tachometer) has been busted for ages and it never occurred that I could check/reset the fuel warning level.

My warning light comes on when the fuel level hits about halfway down the rear internal 'hump' inside the tank.
To me it looks about a litre, maybe a litre and a half, but definitely not 3.  Neutral
(on known long runs I reset the odometer and fill the tank with a 200 mile range in mind, depending on how hard I'm running it.)

I Think most of us do it that way. Fill up - reset trip clock - to 0 (zero) ride till the fuel light comes on. Take a mental if not written note of miles done, refuel and repeat.

My particular riding style saw the light come on between 175 - 190 miles. I would then on average fill 15 - 15.5 ltrs of fuel in. Knowing (from the manual) the tank size is 19ltrs, I'd then do my sums. But of course this gives miles per litre and not ml per mile.

As I use the bike for work, it's quite important to me that I get decent fuel mileage as I'm a real tight arse. It's normally about 53mpg which is still bloody good, but I was shocked when I got 75 out of the cat.

When I go for a thrash I normally take the FZ1, and fill it when the fuel light blinks (normally about 120 miles) that's when I get my smiles per gallon!

re: Oldcats post.
I usually stick in over 16 litres, so that must be about right enough.   Cool

Looking in the tank I'd swear it looks like there's only about a pint (560ml?) left in it though.
...that tank has hidden depths I reckon. Smile
Using 16.5l for the 200 miles it works out at 82.5ml per mile (as opposed to 90) for regular riding, and 117ml per mile when hammering it.

Either way, you've still managed to make a huge saving Nightwatchman.  left thumb up
-edit- I was going to ask if you could maintain that for more than 75 miles, but I see you have other means.   Very Happy

I couldn't do it for more than that, I was almost bored to tears!
And the cat is built to be revved, just goes to show how versatile this bike really is.

Best I did on the Cat was 65mpg on a long run.

On the 636 I think it is 56mpg, recently I did in £15 worth in 45miles, don't know what that equates to.

I use my R6 for work and can usually get about 75 miles from full tank till my light comes on, sometimes less. (ahem early 60) As I only live 2 miles away I hardly get out of third from all the stupid junctions and roundabouts.
On a long ride I get about 120 miles before the light comes on. I'll find out soon enough what she's really like when the sun comes out properly. Not many I don't think.

p.s. How do you get the fuelly thing? Ain't got clue about how to work out my figures.

75 miless!!!!!!! Holy sh1t! Do you ride everywhere in first gear? That definately takes some doing buddy.

As for fuelly, download the app on your phone, create a profile, and start putting your fill ups in. It really is that simple.
