New Engine! Empty New Engine!

Post  fr3tless Sun Feb 23 2014, 15:13

So, I've decided to take the easy-(er) way out, and just buy a new engine. I'm planning on keeping my current one and hopefully fixing it when I can! So hopefully I won't have a second gear issue this time next week... might have broken something else trying to change engines knowing me tongue

All the best on the engine change. I went through that at the beginning of the year. The following might be telling you how to suck eggs, but just in case.

Things to look out for are the exhaust studs and where all the hoses go*, the connectors should be OK as they only go in one way and those close together are different. Might be an idea taking some pics before hand. Copper grease all the bolts as you put them back in.

I managed to 'break' one item : thinking it was easier to remove the throttle cables from the handlebar end rather than fiddle with them on the carbs. I have a lot of 'add-ons' and the space for getting the cable back is rather tight, managed to slightly damage the sheath, still using it though, so wasn't that bad.

You may need to adjust the clutch, if so and you need advice, just shout.
When refilling the coolant, do it slowly (fill the radiator not the expansion tank), you don't want any airlocks. I was told to let the bike run till the fan kicks in and the let the fan cool to the point of shutting off, then stop the engine - all the air should be out, top up the expansion tank.

* Especially the coolant hose to the carb heater and the fuel hose, I can confirm (having accidentally 'tried it')  that the engine does not run on coolant  Embarassed
