Ok, so I've been googling and re-googling this for weeks now. I need advice!

So my situation - I need insurance, but it's hugely expensive. I already have a car policy that covers me to drive any car, or ride any bike, and both relevant licenses. So I already have bike insurance, right?

It's an offence to keep a vehicle without insurance, and I'll get a fine. So essentially, I am an insured rider, but my 'cat is not specifically insured. How do I convince the government/police that all is fine and I'm not actually breaking the rules? I daren't even take my 'cat for it's MOT.

So do I need to spend the £730 on essentially insuring myself twice? I don't know how to tell the MID database people that I am insured, so if I ride like this, surely I will just get pulled over continually?

Help!

Thanks guys,

Tom

Get in contact with your insurers - the ones who blanket cover your car(s) and motorcycle(s) - and ask them to provide a certificate of insurance for the bike, and also to add it - the thundercat - to the national, insurance data base.
I already have a car policy that covers me to drive any car, or ride any bike,
Be careful of the wording on your policy.
It might say something like ;

You may also drive/ride another car/motorcycle, (third party only), that is not owned by you or rented/let to you under a hire purchase/pcp contract.

Typically, ALTHOUGH NOT ALWAYS (you have to read your insurance documents), fully comprehensive insurance allows you to drive or ride another vehicle and will cover you as 3rd party, meaning if you had an accident they will pay for the damage caused by the accident but not to the vehicle you were driving/riding.

However, the vehicle you wish to ride / drive needs to have valid MOT, road tax, you must have the owners permission and the vehicle must already be covered by it's own insurance already.

Also I have never had a car policy that will cover me on a bike or a bike policy that will cover me on a bike. I'm not saying it doesn't happen just that I personally have not had it.

To make a long story short pal, you either need a separate policy for each vehicle, or you need a policy where both vehicles are named on the policy

As well as the advice others have written. I seriously recommend you call your insurance broker/provider BEFORE taking the bike on the public highway.

what he said

I was going to say the same, the bike must be insured before you can ride it.

Shop around, I've just changed my insurance and got a total of £50 excess which I'm chuffed about.

It's probably just a typo' in your post, but just to clarify... It is an offence to keep or use a vehicle on the public highway without insurance. You can keep it on your own property without insurance, which is what I am doing at the moment.

Is it a traders policy you have? If so be very wary, check and double check the policy to ensure you're covered. If it is this kind of blanket policy then it won't show an individual vehicle subject to an ANPR check as being insured but is easily explained to the authorities should you get pulled. The other alternative would be to add your vehicles the policy, but I think to do that all vehicles will need to be registered to the company/individual who holds the policy

As already mentioned by others, for the "Insured to ride any other bike" to be effective, it must already be insured by a proper policy, and the Police will be more than happy to give you points and a fine if you fall into the trap.

Otherwise, you could buy an old Focus, insure it for £200 a year, then buy your Ferrari and not worry about insuring it.

Mike

Every vehicle must be insured or SORN so if it's taxed you'll need to do something PDQ.

I think if you ask insurers there's an off road insurance, basically you're saying you've got it, keep it, don't ride it but want it insured against theft. Worth asking about? Although how that then falls into being covered under another policy's "any vehicle" clause is anyone's guess.

When's your insurance up for renewal? Carole Nash do a "6 wheel" policy, multi-vehicle policy covering both car and bike. Worth giving them a ring, they were about a tenner more for the bike on mine but they couldn't come even close on my car insurance policy, I think the 6 weeks to bring the 2 into line would have cost the same as I'm paying all year for the car
